5 THINGS YOU MAY HAVE MISSED
Hello!
Hope you’re well. Every Friday I send out a newsletter that highlights things from the internet that will inspire, stoke your curiosity and Maybe even improve your life.
These are 5 things you may have missed:
1. Vince Vaugh interview
Would you believe me if I told you that an interview with Vince Vaughn perfectly encapsulates the social and political tensions of our time?
Why would I recommend a video that's hard to listen to? If you are looking for an interview thats just as excellent as it is enjoyable, look to Marc Maron. His live interview with Vince Vaughn is the exact opposite of the NYTs:
2. Smoke Signals, Fucked Up
My favorite band completely alters their sound with this new song… and it works! Fucked Up has always alienated potential fans with their rough vocals. “Smoke Signals” tries a new singer and tones down the punk riffs for a broader appeal and while I’ll always love the old stuff this is an interesting evolution for them.
3. Ben Harkins’s Intrigue - A public access soap opera. As of now it has less than a 1,000 views on Youtube, and that's criminal. This is absolutely the kind of thing that people will look back on and say with complete smugness and say “underrated”. It has everything: Actors who are real (ie not pretty) people, hilarious voices, even funnier names, bad acting, and never ending plot twists. This show is the brain child of Ben Harkins, voted on many occasions “Portland’s funniest”. Its Monty Pythonesque in its commitment to silliness. Tim and Eric inspired in its aesthetic. And Portland as Fuck for its cast. And yes, at the beginning of this email I said these things could benefit your lives and I stand by that.
4. Nintendo Music App - It's fascinating how music listening has evolved over the years and Nintendo’s own proprietary music streaming app is the latest evolution. Will streaming music segment further? For how inexpensive Ninendo’s music app is its well designed, and intuitive to use. It also has some innovative features that other music apps lack like the ability to extend a song from its original length to a custom loop. The app was clearly defined for fans of the “lofi beats to study too” genre and anyone looking for a musical study companion won’t be dissapointed. The library is small but mighty now and Nintendo promises to keep it growing. Hopefully SquareEnix develops a similar service soon.
5. Rap World - One of Portland’s most prolific film critics, Cody Dean, wrote a review on Rap World that sold me on it immediately. Rating it 4 out of 5 stars, he wrote: “I thought Anora had the best ending this year until I saw this. Like time traveling to the worst parties I’ve ever been to in Eugene, OR in 2009. Too Real.” Rap World is amazing for three reasons: 1.) Its whole hearted commitment to its MySpace era aesthetic, 2.) its faithfully embarrassing recreation of 2009 and most importantly, 3.) its one of the funniest movies released in decades. Its free on Youtube and only an hour long. Don’t miss it!
